The West Kowloon Cultural District is one of the largest and most significant cultural projects in the world.

Located at the western tip of the West Kowloon Cultural District, the Hong Kong Palace Museum in WKCD looks out over sweeping views of Hong Kong’s iconic Victoria Harbour. It occupies some 13,000 square metres with a total floor area of about 30,000 square metres and exhibition space of 7,800 square metres. There are ample rest areas both inside and outside the museum, as well as an array of amenities, such as an auditorium, atriums, educational spaces, gift shops, and eateries. The museum will also provide barrier-free facilities and nursery rooms.

The Hong Kong Palace Museum in WKCD aspires to become one of the world’s leading cultural institutions committed to the study and appreciation of Chinese art and culture, while advancing dialogue among world civilizations through international partnerships. Located at the western tip of the West Kowloon Cultural District, with sweeping views of the city’s iconic Victoria Harbour, the museum is scheduled to open in mid-2022.

The museum will have 7,600 square metres of gallery space dedicated to gold, bronze and jade items, paintings, and ceramic objects, as well as displays on life in the Imperial Court. Other museum facilities include a 400-seat lecture theatre, activity rooms, a restaurant and shop etc.

Based around a contemporary interpretation of classic Chinese visual and spatial aesthetics, the museum design builds on a concept of linked courtyards translated into a vertical series of atriums that draw the visitor upwards. Located adjacent to the Art Park and facing Victoria Harbour, the Hong Kong Palace Museum will provide a distinctive cultural bookend to the District at its western end.

The Palace Museum in WKCD also be awarded the Hornorable Mention, Autodesk Hong Kong BIM Awards 2021.

Embracing new curatorial approaches, the museum will offer a Hong Kong perspective and a global vision, presenting the finest objects from the Palace Museum and other leading cultural institutions around the world. Through innovative research and travelling exhibitions, as well as educational, cultural, and professional exchange programmes, the museum will build international partnerships and help position Hong Kong as a global centre for art and culture. It is a collaborative project between the West Kowloon Cultural District Authority and the Palace Museum. The capital cost of the museum is fully funded by a donation of HK$3.5 billion from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust.

Manholes made by Stile wooden floor

Approx. 5500m2 Stille (Italy) engineering wooden floor planks were installed in late 2021 in exhibition halls of the Palace Museum in the West Kowloon Cultural District. The wooden floor planks are with 6mm real wood wear layer (wood spiece – Jatoba) and 12mm Phenolic multilayer Birch backing (total thickness 18mm), there are bi-level edges on four plank sides, the board surface has factory coated protective layer, and hence, it can be used right after installation.

The installation process including to lay moisture-proof PVC films, nailing down 12mm ant-proof playwood backing, followed by laying the floor plabks, and finally laying cotton form sheet and MDF board for protection before use.

In addition to laying wooden floors in all exhibition halls, this project also includes more than 350 no. of matching covers to provide power and data ports for the display racks on top, to support the use of moisture-proof, anti-theft and lighting equipment.
